Disk is unreadable

Hey there,

First off, my XBOX 360 isn't broken, so I am not using the stickied thread....  I did check several links in that thread though and didn't find this precise problem in the troublehshooting FAQ or the forum listed there - so, here I am...

I bought my XBOX 360 three days ago and it is great - but I'm having ''The disk cannot be read'' errors after a few hours of play.  Once with Gears and once with Oblivion so far.  It is only two errors, but in three days, that seems a little iffy.

My question is: should I be looking into getting this repaired, or is this normal?  I would immediately think yes, but I remember with some games this just happened periodically on my original XBOX - am I just unlucky, or do I have a lemon?  Thanks for your answers - and, in worst case, direct me to where I should be going. Disk is unreadable
Could anyone just tell me if this is normal for an XBOX 360? Did I luck onto two lemon disks? Do I have an older model with a weaker drive in there, as was the case with early models of the original XBOX?Disk is unreadable
dude i don't know if it is normal or not but i had the same problem with gears and gears only and i have had my 360 for close to a year.
I have that problem from time to time with my 360, mainly at least twice a month. It hasn't been doing it lately though *KNOCKS ON WOOD*. I wouldn't worry about it, unless it does it everytime you play, then I would call Microsoft; 1800-4-MYXBOX.
It has happened to me with Gears of War as well. I think it might be the game. I haven't had any problems lately.

Yeah, that's what I'm wondering. I know Morrowind used to screw my original XBOX around a lot like this, while most games ran perfectly. Just wondering if it's the games (Gears/Oblivion) that just go like that sometimes, whether it's just a general XBOX 360 problem (which it doesn't seem to be based on what you're saying), or whether my XBOX is a lemon :S

Thanks for the response in any case. Anyone else have any ideas? I'll get it replaced later today if my XBOX is screwed...
This happens with mine all the time with mine.  I think Microsoft needs to fess up that something is wrong with their disc drives in the XBOX 360!
Ah, thanks a ton for your responses all. I'll just keep an eye on it for a few days before I do anything... If anyone else has any other comments though, I'll watch the thread for a bit more time.
I think the problem is your 360 is overheating, and then it can't read the disk correctly. I have the same problem with numerous games, and I'm getting mine repaired if Microsoft ever decides to send me a box.
yeah. i had a somewhat similar problem. when i first got my 360 i got oblivion with it, after the first day of playing the game would take literally a minute or so to load everyhting. even something so small as a conversation. i was worried because it was perfect the first day, but messed up the second. i went to the store and got a new copy and it worked like a charm. so perhaps you got REALLY unlucky with lemon disks. out of curosity, were they new or used?

Both new from EB. I don't see any scratches, but... Well, maybe they're worth replacing then.
dude i don't know if it is normal or not but i had the same problem with gears and gears only and i have had my 360 for close to a year.
I get the same thing with COD3 and gears.
hmmmm, I wonder if the 360 gets so hot that it warps the plastic on the discs just enough to be unplayable!?
I bought all of my games new as well, and still recieved the disk cannot be read message. It's the system, not the games.
I bought all of my games new as well, and still recieved the disk cannot be read message. It's the system, not the games.
I believe its the system as well. When I first got Gears, I put the game in and it would say disc reading for awhile and then open tray...it wouldn't play at all. All my other games worked perfectly fine. So I brought the game back to Best buy and got another one and it did the same exact thing as the last disc. So then I removed the hard drive and put it back on and all of a sudden its been starting fine...but I have gotten the disc read error during gameplay. I don't understand how removing the hard drive would fix this, but it did for me.

Could have just been a coincidence!?
I got the same problem only once since I got it on the 25th, with PDZ.  Hasn't happened with anything else but I was also wondering if I should be worried.  Guess not.
happens 24/7 for me on oblivion
Guys i had this problem to nothing would play, then i opened the disk drive and blew inside it...they all worked after that.. hope it works for you! :)
ALL cd/dvd drives can get dirty and their lasers can get out of alignment.  You can get a disc cleaner which looks like a cd/dvd with a little section of brushes on it at most electronic stores.  This will clean the lense off.  If that doesn't work then the laser is probably out of alignment - you would need to contact MS to get them to adjust it.  Or most electronic service shops can do it - but if it's not MS doing it, it may void the warranty.
